Austria Continued
We travelled on to our next campsite Camping Grubhof which
is near Salzburg
www.grubhof.com/en/campsite-austria/home.html it took about 2.5 hours to get here.
The site is beautifully well maintained and our pitch is
next to the river and very picturesque.
Today we went to Oberzalberg to visit the historic Eagle’s
Nest, an amazing building, quite a feat of engineering that was built in the
late 1930’s and presented to Adolf Hitler on his 50th birthday, 20th
April, 1939.
To get to the top you have to first get the coach for the
4.5 km on a one lane very windy and steep road, then you get the lift inside
the mountain to the very top.
It felt very strange to me knowing that Adolf Hitler had
walked where I was walking, quite eerie really. Now the building has been turned into a
restaurant as no place can be turned into a shrine to Hitler and quite rightly
so. Outside the Eagle’s Nest on top of
the mountain it was quite windy and deep snow still covers the ground in
places. A light jacket needed to be warn
to ward off the chilled air but the visibility was superb, we were surrounded
by snow topped mountains and you could see the low lying villages below.

Berchtesgaden
After leaving the Eagle’s nest we visited Berchtesgaden a
lovely Austrian village where we had a drink and watched the world go by.
All in all a lovely day.
